Particularly suitable for manufacturing lines and process control applications the maxon integrated drive features a maintenance free combination of a 54 mNm 12, 24 and 48V brushless DC motor, 4000qc 3 channel incremental encoder with line driver (complimentary channels) and a full digital position and speed control unit. The position control is offered in two versions. One with internal processor and memory for pre-programming and standalone position control operation. This unit also has CANOpen master functionality. The second version is a CAN slave unit. Multiple integrated drives can then be daisy chained off the first and a complete standalone coordinated multi axis drive network can be configured. Alternatively the slave drives can be connected directly with a PLC or FPGA based master. The motor units are supplied with the powerful EPOS studio tool for easy gain configuration and motor tuning. Standardised IEC 61131-3 simplifies development and reduces costs. Planetary gearheads are available in a piece part system allowing adjustment for required application speed and torque.

maxon motor unveil the first complete sterilisable motor, gear and encoder drive system


The first of its kind! Brushless DC motor (BLDC motor), Planetary Gearhead and a choice of incremental and Absolute encoder all assembled to order in sterilisable form.

This is the first time a sterilisable encoder has been offered and it opens up new possibilities for the medical automation, laboratory automation and dental fields. A full position controllable system that is sterilisable.

The new encoder will have the optional output formats of both incremental to 1024 counts per revolution or Absolute with a 4096cpt (12 Bit). In standard combination with high speed brushless motors in 13mm and 16mm diameter speeds of 120,000rpm are possible and power levels over 100W. The high input speed gearheads can be selected with the correct ratio so match the applications speed and torque requirements and are of a robust stainless steel laser welded construction. Medical hand tools and specialist tools for controlled environments will benefit from this new development.

New DC servo gear motor combinations


Complex processing applications requiring human interaction require absolute precision to ensure operator safety. New zero backlash brushless DC servo gear motors with absolute encoder combinations supply the solution.

When a mineral processing company required an automation process involving high torque levels in close proximity to the machinery operator, new product thinking was required. The heavy equipment being moved generates considerable inertia that would need to hold under brake tension. Position control of the load requires encoder feedback on the brushless DC motor to compliment absolute encoder feedback on the load and zero backlash on the gearhead to ensure the unit is in the exact position that the control system thinks it is.

The solution pictured is the first assembled combination of a maxon 60mm 48V 400w brushless DC motor, 3 channel digital incremental encoder, 24V holding brake and 160:1 zero backlash gearhead. This new motor solution can hold a 400Nm load continuously and withstand shock loading on the output of up to 2200Nm. Speeds of up to 30rpm are capable from the unit and it is easily configured for use with servo amplifiers or position controllers having zero cogging or mechanical detents.

Subsea thruster – new performance levels.

maxon motor produce a range of underwater actuators and subsea thrusters for the oil and gas industry and general ROV applications. They utilise maxon brushless DC motors and planetary gearheads submerged in oil filled housings to achieve ground-breaking performance when used submerged in water. Three sizes have received updated performance levels. The 20, 30 and 40mm diameter units. The standard propellers are an effective compromise between high bollard thrust and high efficiency. maxon motor can also provide calculations for optimisation of the propeller thrust in each application. Starting with the 20mm thruster, it is fitted with a standard option 50mm diameter 3-blade propeller. It can produce peaks of over 2.5kg thrust and has a weight in air of 290g and 145g in water. The 30mm can produce over 5kg of thrust from an 80mm propeller weighing in at 450g in air and 262g in water. The 40mm with a 110mm propeller achieves over 11kg thrust peaks. All units are recommended for oil filling with Panolin HLP Synth 15 and are fitted with industry standard Subconn connectors. Pressure compensation is achieved vial optional compensation modules recommended for each thruster size.

Tailoring the perfect custom DC gear motor solution.

This robust right angle DC servo gear motor example showcases maxon motors capability to supply unique solutions for demanding applications. Supplied into Australia’s defence industry the motor and gearing needed to be of the most robust and efficient design.

The system is comprised of an 40mm rare earth brushless DC motor fitted with a 42mm 66:1 ceramic planetary reduction gearhead, a right angle 5:1 helical bevel reduction gearhead and a 500cpt digital encoder. The combination is specifically assembled to provide the exact proportion of speed and torque within a fixed shape the motor needs to fit within. The reduction ratio split between the two gearheads needs to be carefully selected in order to focus the high speed and low torque power transmission function on the ceramic planetary gearhead utilising the advantages of a gearhead containing high wear resistant ceramic components. The low speed high torque transfer task is conducted by a large low ratio helical bevel gear train. This design gearbox contains a very large tooth section by comparison to the planetary gearhead making it more suitable for this task. maxon motor’s 40mm rare earth motor gives high levels of power without the negative influences of a laminated stack within the motor. This coreless, ironless design allows for zero cogging movement and accurate motor control at low speeds for precision positioning control.
