When prototyping with Brushless DC motors information is key to product success.

Pictured here is a highly customised brushless DC motor developed for special aerospace applications. The 200W nominal 30mm diameter has had a special winding wound to suit the unique requirements of the application where the motor needs characteristics for driving and generation. It is a 4 pole topography with a sealed stainless steel body and welded flanges. The application for this brushless DC motor requires operation for very short bursts of power at over 500W. To facilitate testing that gives design engineers absolute confidence the winding will never exceed its thermal limits a platinum thin film temperature sensor has been fitted in contact with each phase. This allows the R&D staff to slowly increase the duty cycle whilst monitoring temperature and develop controller functionalities around the thermal limits. In addition the motor has been assembled with a planetary gearhead that is quite special in itself. The gearhead ratio has been slightly adjusted to allow for smaller planetary gear diameters. The smaller diameters allow for an additional set of gears on the output stage increasing the torque capabilities. A special 2RS rubber sealed bearing has been incorporated along with a customer specified axial threaded bore in the middle of the shaft. At the rear of the motor is a 4,096 quad count encoder facilitating the smooth zero cogging motion control.

Particularly suitable for manufacturing lines and process control applications the maxon integrated drive features a maintenance free combination of a 54 mNm 12, 24 and 48V brushless DC motor, 4000qc 3 channel incremental encoder with line driver (complimentary channels) and a full digital position and speed control unit. The position control is offered in two versions. One with internal processor and memory for pre-programming and standalone position control operation. This unit also has CANOpen master functionality. The second version is a CAN slave unit. Multiple integrated drives can then be daisy chained off the first and a complete standalone coordinated multi axis drive network can be configured. Alternatively the slave drives can be connected directly with a PLC or FPGA based master. The motor units are supplied with the powerful EPOS studio tool for easy gain configuration and motor tuning. Standardised IEC 61131-3 simplifies development and reduces costs. Planetary gearheads are available in a piece part system allowing adjustment for required application speed and torque.

New 30mm brushless DC motor range.

maxon motor have released a new range of 30mm diameter brushless DC motors in versions that offer increased torque or increased speed.

The new range will initially consist of 4 power versions ranging from 30 to 75W. They feature uncompromised quality with all stainless steel laser welded flanges and body. Stainless steel large dimension preloaded ball bearing system and a hardened stainless steel shaft. They integrate into the maxon modular system with a range of encoder and gearbox selections allowing engineers to create a dedicated mechatronic solution for each application. The range uses the latest production technologies offered by maxon motors new manufacturing facility in Korea which achieves a cost competitive solution suitable for general automation, power tools, seat actuators and process control machinery. Maximum speeds of 15,000rpm and selectable winding configurations allowing for use on 12V, 24V and 48V DC systems add versatility and this is coupled with torque levels over 100mNm from a 30mm diameter motor. Brushless DC motor – pushing it to the limit

When prototyping for applications with extreme requirements for brushless DC motors, fast condition monitoring is critical.

Motor applications with limited space available and comparatively large power requirements can push a motor very close to burning out. In theory, it is possible to use temperature calculations for the motor winding with the help of thermal resistance rating from the motor data sheets, ambient temperatures, heat sinking details and housing characteristics. This is always considered first and then tolerances and safety margins are considered. Following this thermal modelling software and imaging can be evaluated. However some applications push a motor so close to the edge, that only real product prototype testing can be relied upon. Simply installing motors and testing how hard you can push them can also be a costly exercise and does not give enough reliable data. Actual winding temperature sensing on the motor is a solution maxon motor offer for these extreme cases. By inserting sensors through ports in the magnetic return stack and in direct contact with the winding, maxon motor can give customers a device that monitors winding temperatures without the thermal time constant delays experienced when measuring winding resistance and using housing thermal time constants.

Brushless flat DC motors going to Mars.

Brushless motors from maxon motor are again being used by NASA for the Mars 2020 rover.

For critical tasks you need the best quality. The Jet Propulsion Laboratory have selected nine brushless flat motors from maxon motor for the rover which they intend will take soil samples and seal them in containers for future transport to Earth. Various motion applications are performed. Sample tube holding, the robotic arm, container handling, sample gathering and container sealing. 32mm diameter and 20mm diameter flat brushless motors have been combined with heavy duty 22mm planetary gearheads and modified specifically for the Mars mission in close collaboration with JPL for the difficult conditions experienced with descent, landing, sandstorms and the -130 to +70 degree temperatures.

Schindler is a well-known manufacturer of elevators and lifts, moving more than one billion people every day. When we take the lift, we press the button, the cab arrives, we enter and disembark at the desired floor. What is a simple event has alot of technology in the undertaking – in the elevator shaft, motor chamber, control box and in the lift compartment itself.

A motor installed in the cab opens and closes both the doors of the cab and the doors at each particular floor. The requirements of the motor are very specific: small yet powerful, reliable, energy-saving and intelligent. Maxon developed two Door Drives alongside Schindler, using a brushless DC motor with a diameter of 90 millimeters, a MILE encoder combined with the motor and a customised EPOS2 positioning controller. With two power levels, the more powerful version uses a belt drive and is able to move doors weighing up to 400 kilograms. The smaller and latest version is more compact and moves doors weighing up to 120 kilograms.

Encased in a housing, the Door Drive can be mounted directly onto the lift cab. And this is where its real work starts. The ability to adapt to the many different types of elevators, with differently sized cabs, different materials and, depending on the country, different safety standards. After a calibration procedure, the controller of the Door Drive detects the size and weight of the doors, autonomously calculates the optimal parameters corrects them if necessary and drives the doors open and closed.

maxon motor have unveiled the first sterilisable encoder for brushless DC motors. This will create many opportunities for advances in medical technology.

The first steam sterilisable encoder has been released by maxon motor. The ENX EASY is available in two versions, as an incremental (1024 CPT) and an absolute version (4096 CPT). It can be integrated into suitable motors without increasing the length. The encoder has allowed maxon to create the first sterilisable drive system with brushless DC motor, gearhead and integrated encoder.
