Doctors rely upon high-resolution CT images, for example, to guide biopsies, make diagnoses or for pain relief therapies. After identifying an area for biopsy, surgeons ascertain how to reach the area, where to place the needle tip, what angle to follow and how to minimise damage to healthy tissue. To combat these issues with pin-point technology, a German company designed an automated laser-guided system consisting of a ceiling mounted arc-shaped rail on which a motorised laser positioning unit is affixed. The laser guides the entry point, depth and angle for a needle that is 0.7mm thin.
A brushless maxon DC motor combination, selected for the small size and reliability of operation, meticulously drives the unit on the arc’s rail, which holds the rotary laser. The brushless flat EC motor with a diameter of 45mm is fitted with a planetary gearhead and MR Encoder. Two more brushless maxon DC motors control the rotation of the laser mirrors, the EC-max 16 fitted with a GP 16A planetary gearhead and MR encoder. These brushless DC motors allow for exact positioning of the laser beam and are controlled using three EPOS2 Modules.

For high torque and low speed applications such as the joints of a robot, the fundamental DC pancake motor can be difficult to integrate. Maxon offers a brushless frameless motor as a kit, available on request, with outer diameters from 32mm through to 90mm. These powerful DC motors are compact. The stator and rotor are delivered separately (without bearings and motor shaft) and are only connected at the very last minute when the components are assembled. The windings are available in 12V, 24V, 36V and 48V DC. This can be tailored to the application allowing space for the passing of fiber, electrical or air cabling and hoses. The brushless frameless DC motors have high numbers of pole pairs and can be delivered with or without a Hall sensor for easy control.

Maxon motor built models of the Mars Rovers Sojourner, Opportunity and ExoMars for a Space exhibit at the Swiss Museum of Transport.
The Swiss Museum of Transport in Lucerne is updating their Space exhibition. With maxon motor trainee help, the exhibit features complete 1:1 scale models of the Mars Rovers Sojourner, Opportunity and ExoMars. The models have moving parts including the camera head and drilling units. Visitors at the Swiss Museum can get an up-close look at the outer space technology and even take a selfie with a Mars Rover.
Maxon motor manufactured 35 DC motors and drives in the real Opportunity Rover that survived 10+ years on Mars. As well, at their headquarters in Sachseln, maxon assembled parts of the ExoMars Rover including modules that drive the vehicle and are responsible for the steering. The ExoMars is due for launch in 2020.

The phase out of an old DC motor and the realisation of power, weight and price advantages of new designs, widens customer device application areas.
The maxon 2260 series of brushed DC motors was for decades an industry standard, providing reliable high torque performance. Because of its quality and longevity it was not considered for replacement or design-out until they were informed via maxon motor’s discontinuation policy procedures of its pending obsolescence. The initial disappointment and concern was quickly turned to relief after maxon initiated application engineer contact to advise customers about the available replacement possibilities. The maxon DC 2260 motor featured a continuous power rating of 80W and 330mNm of torque from 60mm diameter and 126mm length. The motor had a mass of 1300g. The typical replacement motor for the 2260 is the maxon RE50. This new motor features a continuous power rating of 200W and 450mNm from a 50mm diameter and 108mm length. What’s more, there are higher speed capabilities, a 200g weight reduction and yes, it is less expensive. In one instance the performance increase has given a customer’s product increased versatility and higher sales. Complex processing applications requiring human interaction require absolute precision to ensure operator safety. New zero backlash brushless DC servo gear motors with absolute encoder combinations supply the solution.
When a mineral processing company required an automation process involving high torque levels in close proximity to the machinery operator, new product thinking was required. The heavy equipment being moved generates considerable inertia that would need to hold under brake tension. Position control of the load requires encoder feedback on the brushless DC motor to compliment absolute encoder feedback on the load and zero backlash on the gearhead to ensure the unit is in the exact position that the control system thinks it is.
The solution pictured is the first assembled combination of a maxon 60mm 48V 400w brushless DC motor, 3 channel digital incremental encoder, 24V holding brake and 160:1 zero backlash gearhead. This new motor solution can hold a 400Nm load continuously and withstand shock loading on the output of up to 2200Nm. Speeds of up to 30rpm are capable from the unit and it is easily configured for use with servo amplifiers or position controllers having zero cogging or mechanical detents.
